So on 23rd December, at the height of Christmas celebrations, my hubby, his nephew and my mother in law were almost killed by a drunk driver who fell asleep in his car! Looking at our now write-off Subaru, I ask myself how they survived with not even a scratch! Argh! I can only thank God for that!
I have been a drunk driver enough times in my life, so I am not sure I am qualified to be angry at the one who nearly brought us tragedy! In my younger days, I thought it was cool to drive drunk, boast at friends the following day how I could not remember how I got home - you know, that stupid statement Kenyans so love; 'the car knows it's way home'... I have used it enough times. I have even bought the designated driver alcohol just to keep him around longer, long enough for me to finish my drink! What was I thinking??? We even had minor accidents, obviously due to our drunk driving, but we always laughed about it! I however blame all that on youth. Not a good enough excuse, but an excuse all the same!
As for the driver who almost killed 3 very dear people to me, I wish I could see him again and ask him what his excuse for drinking and falling asleep behind the wheel is: his excuse is obviously not 'youth' as he is older than me, probably old enough to be my father! I guess he is just a moron, and it gives me the jitters to think how many morons are in charge of wheels in Kenya at the moment, especially at this holiday season...
Whatever you do, do not drive drunk! Accidents may happen, but you do not want to be responsible for killing people just because you did not want people to think you do not own a car by using a cab!
